The community issue i'm writing about is hunger in the community. Specifically with elderly people. What's the issue? The issue is that according to the article UNC School of Government, food insecurity, which refers to not having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable and nutritious food, affects 14 percent of residents in Orange and Wake counties and 18 percent in Durham. And an often overlooked majority of those people are elderly.
Why does this interest me? This interests me because its sad how the most fragile people in our community dont have access basic necessities like food. And It shouldn't be this way. How are we affected? We have to pay more taxes for government funded programs such as food stamps and non profit cafeterias and food lines. When they could be getting just enough food regularly. Why should others care about this issue? Because they're elderly people. If you were starving you wouldn't want people to not care about you. It's just like giving back to the community. What can you or I do as a single person do to help this problem? You can try to make more awareness of it, and donate canned foods to local food banks. A 2014 study at UNC reports that over half of patients aged 65+ who are seen at UNC Hospitals are found to be malnourished. This means seniors aren't getting enough to eat. Another thing you can do is volunteer for meals on wheels. What can we do as a community? We can start mass food drives at local gyms and schools. We can volunteer to do stop hunger or take spots in makeshift cafeterias. We can do many things as a large power.
